The 2023 Solheim Cup will take place in Malaga Spain at the Finca Cortesin golf course between Friday 22 September and Sunday 24th September. It marks the eighteenth edition of the tournament as it returns to Europe after being played in the USA in 2021.
Europe have been victorious over the last two tournaments, in 2019 and 2021 in which they were captained by Catriona Matthew. Suzann Petterson captains the Europe team this year for the first time and is hoping to guide her team to a third consecutive win which would be the first in Solheim Cup history.
Team Europe’s vice captains are:
- Laura Davies (England)
- Caroline Martens (Norway)
- Anna Nordqvist (Sweden)
First time captain Stacy Lewis will be captain of the USA team, replacing Pat Hurst under whom the team lost in 2021.
Team USA’s vice captains are:
- Morgan Pressel
- Natalie Gulbis
- Angela Standord
The tournament will take place over three days of action, each match will have one point on offer and a draw results in half a point each. In total, there are 28 points on offer, meaning fourteen and a half points are needed to win the competition. The format is as follows:
- Friday: Foursome in the morning followed by Fourball in the afternoon
- Saturday: Foursome in the morning followed by Fourball in the afternoon
- Sunday: Twelve single matches
Finca Cortesin in Andalucia will make Spain the sixth country to hold the tournament, a first in Spanish golf history. The course is one of the longest in Europe, with the par- 72 layout measuring nearly 7,5000 meters in total so will provide a challenging test for players next month. The course has previously held the Volvo World Match Championship in 2009, 2011 and 2012.
As we head into the 2023 Solheim Cup, team USA have won ten of the seventeen tournaments in total, although Europe has won four of the last six. This includes the 2019 competition at Gleneagles which the Europeans won by the smallest margin ever, 14½ to 13½.
While the odds are very tight, the bookies currently have the USA as slight favorites to win the tournament with Bet365, Sky Bet and Coral having them at 11/10. Europe are 11/10 to win the tournament with Bet365 while William Hill, Bet Victor and UniBet have the reigning champions at 21/20.
The chances of a draw between the two teams are 12/1 with Bet 365, William Hill and Sky Bet.
As anticipation grows for the tournament, the European hosts will be chasing a third consecutive victory over Team USA in the 2023 Solheim Cup which is set to be a tight contest between the two top teams!
